It’s Friday! That means another Cool Comic Covers, a weekly (sometimes more!) look back at some of the most interesting, intriguing, and engaging artwork in pop culture. This week, with all the hoopla about Superman kissing Wonder Woman, I was reminded of a cover image I saw when I was just a young man . . .
First, the hoopla. People are getting upset that, in the New 52, Superman and Wonder Woman are romantically linked. Because this cover was leaked to the public:
The problem? Lois Lane is Superman’s one true love, right? Well, sort of. First of all, the above image comes from a new continuity, a storyline that has started over from scratch. So why WOULDN’T Superman and Wonder Woman be interested in each other while Clark Kent is still getting to know and befriend Lois Lane. I’m sure, in time, Clark Kent and Lois Lane will be right back into the comfortable relationship we all know and love.
Second, Lois Lane, while the most prominent woman in Superman’s life, is far from the only woman he has ever loved. There is, for example, his childhood sweetheart Lana Lang. And there is Wonder Woman, someone who, in some of the old school (or middle-ish school) stories, Superman admiting having some feelings for.
As evidenced by this cover:
Now, that little image on the top left is what I remembered seeing, and being confused by, but I never saw this cover. No, the image I remember seeing is the one below. Judging by Lois Lane on the above cover, she also saw it:
I don’t know if that was actually released as the cover, though. None of the normal sources I usually go to show this as an actual comic cover. But it’s the image I remember.
But, this isn’t the first time that Superman and Wonder Woman have kissed. I present to you, one of the spoiler-est comic covers in all of history:
So, what happens in this story? Superman and Wonder Woman will kiss, their passion will be witnessed by their real love interests, and it was all created by Eros or Cupid or whatever Greek myth character that’s meant to be. Do you even need to read the comic? I’m sure there are other comics out there that give away everything, but I don’t know if any of them give away everything so completely and neatly.
Of course, Lois Lane cannot throw stones, for she is no more innocent than Superman when it comes to kissing other superheroes.
Oh, Aquaman . . . what about Mera?
What’s the deal with superheroes? Are none of them faithful?
Superman, this is getting to be a problem.
Sheesh. Well, Superman, I’ll give you this one. She seems to be the one doing the kissing.
So, there you have it, proof that not only is Lois Lane not Superman’s one true love, but superhero comics ARE just soap operas with capes.
