I do not for the life of me understand how you guys can rate Star Trek so high. I LIKED it, but there were real groaners in that movie… Eye-rolls and chuckling, no kidding! That CANNOT measure up to the likes of Man of Steel and Pacific Rim (the two best movies of the summer BY FAR).
Pacific Rim has especially become a sore spot for me, but that’s nothing new. I’ve been into Japanese monster movies and especially mecha anime since I was in high school (mid-80s), and it has CONSTANTLY been a thorn in my side that Americans don’t get this stuff. Del Toro comes out with this beautiful, artistic and masterfully combined mash-up of Japanese genre pictures and what do American audiences say? “It’s kinda like Transformers but a little better”… AAAAARRRGH!!! At least the international box office made up for our shortcomings… Much like John Carter, Pacific Rim deserved much better from us…
I completely agree with you about Pacific Rim. Trek and Supes were my two top contenders, but Pacific Rim is not too far back for third. And those three leave everything else in the dust for me.
The next level down is filled with watchable movies — like After Earth and Lone Ranger — and while they deserve passing grades, they don’t come close to those top three.
The next level down? Well, bring your flashlight, because it’s deep down. No more said about those two.
Pacific Rim, though not quite as rounded a film as I would have liked, was my favorite film of the summer by a lot with its wonderful sense of style in mech and creature design, and some truly fun fights. Trek was better than I expected thanks largely to the presence of Benedict Cumberbatch, but I still had the same major problems with it that I had with the first film. And Iron Man 3, though looking better to me in retrospect, still feels underwhelming. Unfortunately, I haven’t had a chance to see Man of Steel, so I can’t comment on it. I’ll be very interested to see how it stacks up to the rest of these films for me, personally.
