THE RESCUERS — Strange Christmas Movies Round Two (#35 of 48)

Three years ago, the 24 days leading up to Christmas, Strangers and Aliens presented 24 Christmas movies that aren’t Christmas movies, but really kind of are, for various reasons. And now, we’re doing it again! Here’s 24 more Christmas movies that are set around Christmas or use Christmas to set tone or set up a theme . . . but weren’t made to be Christmas movies…

#35 — The Rescuers

rescuersWhat it’s supposed to be: A Disney animated classic about a world within our world. Animals within the walls, under the floors, and around the corner just out of sight are living unseen lives, and some of them – like the heroes of this movie — are given assignments to help out children in need of help. And so, Bernard and Bianca set out to rescue Penny from the hands of Madame Medussa…

Why it’s a Christmas movie: Spoiler alert: the child is rescued by the rescuers. And she gets adopted. Just in time for Christmas, suggested by the snow that’s falling and the kid with a candy cane in the crowd that we get a glimpse of briefly while the mice are watching the news.

Thoughts: This one’s a weak connection. But I’m no stranger to weak connections. It’s what I do. It’s what this blog series is! So I get a chance to write about a great movie and maybe mention the sequel that expands on this world a bit, and maybe talk a little bit about The Great Mouse Detective, which could be considered another movie in this “world” of hidden animals who help humans, and also mention Chip and Dale’s Rescue Rangers, which belongs in this world, too.

Is It Naughty or Nice? A great Disney animated feature, if not a great Christmas movie. But definitely a STRANGE Christmas movie.

Santa Ben’s Verdict:

Nice
