Famous Funnies #214 (Cool Comic Covers #10)

Cool Comic Covers is a weekly (almost) look back at some of the most interesting, intriguing, and engaging artwork in pop culture. This week:

Famous Funnies #214

After Avengers Week, we’re getting away from superhero comics and getting back to some sci-fi comics.

Frank Frazetta is one of the giants of fantasy art, and did a number of comic books before he created the paintings he is known for.

For famous funnies, he drew covers featuring Buck Rogers. Now, I have no idea what the story is behind this cover, but this cool cover does the job a cover should do:

It makes you curious what is going on inside.

Also, it’s a very interesting cover with the planet taking up most of the space. It makes for a different feel. I don’t think this would be as captivating as it is if the background was all stars and nebulas or whatever.

I really want to know who that guy standing on the ship is, and what he’s doing. And how . . .

(He reminds me a bit of Aquaman, actually. From back in the “I’m such an angry king of the sea that I’m going to a rock a blonde pirate beard” phase.)

How did they draw those wonderful ships! I wish I could draw ships like that!

Some of the upcoming cool comic covers feature more of that wonderful imaginative sci-fi artwork. It’s beautiful, and so much fun. Not many sci-fi artists or storytellers would just let their imagination flow like this these days . . .
