NEW POLL! What’s Your Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy Trilogy?

In our last poll, Joker HANDILY took the top Batman villain spot.

So the big question now that the Dark Knight has risen . . . what is the best sci-fi/fantasy trilogy of all time?

There are some really bad trilogies out there, so for the purposes of this poll we included trilogies that are loved by many (if not all). Also, they have elements of sci-fi and fantasy, obviously. We didn’t want to stretch the definition of trilogy too much — for example, tucked in the six original crew Star Trek movies, Star Trek II, III, and IV form a trilogy . . . but VI also fits into that series thematically, and it just gets messy from there.

    Since I coukld only go with one, I had to go Star Wars (eps 4-6). But I have a very strong attachment to the LOtR series as well. I confess I wavered for a moment.

      Yes, in the end I HAD to go with Star Wars original series as well. I almost clicked on Lord of the Rings and then almost clicked on Dark Knight, but I came back home . . .

    I had to go with LOTR, and here’s why: I own both trilogies on DVD, and whenever I want to re-watch an old favorite, I’ll always reach for those big LOTR boxes (I have the extended versions) over the Star Wars. LOTR has much more value to me as a story that resonates time and time again. I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve read through the Hobbit and the LOTR; I’ve never re-read a single Star Wars novel. Maybe part of that has to do with how overexposed Star Wars has become since the prequels came out; I don’t know.

    The other trilogies are entertaining and thought-provoking (for the most part), but LOTR is inspiring. It’s an epic for our contemporary culture, written by a devout Catholic. I’ve found it powerful and extremely relevant.

      Hanna, I have to agree with your assessment, although I hadn’t thought of it like that. Your one word description of Lord of the Rings — “inspiring” — encapsulates the appeal of LOTR perfectly!

    I ended up voting for Star Wars 4-6. It was tough, particularly with LOTR in there.

    I would say they are on the same level, but elevate Star Wars over LOTR purely on the differences in the movie versions of LOTR compared to the book.

    I am a devotee of all things Middle Earth, and have read Lord of the Rings on average of once per year since the age of 9, a couple years more. As time as passed, I now consider it to be the most crafted book I have ever read.

    So, while I do very much enjoy the movies I take strong issue with some of the characteristics that they changed in regards to Frodo and Samwise and other story changes I didn’t necessarily see the point of. And yes, I realize they couldn’t film the entire book as a movie… otherwise we’d probably just now be getting to the passing Denethor.

    All of the trilogies mentioned are amongst my favorites, though Mad Max and potentially Batman near the bottom (but still well loved) but above Raimi’s Spiderman (due to the 3rd abysmal effort).
