Now that I’ve caught up on the Marvel movies, I listened to this episode. Always fun to hear you guys talk, but I remain baffled at the extreme love given to GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, both here and on the rest of the Internet. It’s a decent movie, but not worth as much as people are giving it.

It’s just a rehash of a bunch of stuff we’ve seen elsewhere, and done much better elsewhere at that. Peter, the hero with the pop culture references, was done better when it was John Crichton on FARSCAPE. And the bandits-in-space thing was done significantly better on FIREFLY.

The villains are boring and one-dimensional, and (as you noted, Ben) Karen Gillan is completely wasted (just as another DOCTOR WHO alum, Christopher Eccleston, was wasted in THOR: THE DARK WORLD).

Zoe Saldana is good, but does she have to be the female lead in every single sci-fi franchise now?

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good movie, and I can see why it’s popular. I just can’t see why it’s SO popular, and why everyone is saying that it’s the best Marvel movie of all time, period. I just don’t get that at all.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER deepens the characterizations from the previous films, has a complex political metaphor, and delivers the best action sequences this side of THE DARK KNIGHT and SKYFALL. All that, and it pivotally moved forward the events of the MCU. It’s the best movie in the series outside of THE AVENGERS itself, and I hope the Russo brothers do take over as “show runners” after Joss Whedon leaves (as is rumored).

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST manages to take everything that worked about the previous X-MEN movies and combine them into one film. The scene between the two Xaviers is one for the ages. A lot of continuity issues are cleaned up while telling an entertaining story at the same time. This one vies with X2 and FIRST CLASS for the position of my favorite X-MEN movie.

Again, I like GotG, but I think the other Marvel movies were vastly superior.

Anyway, enough ranting for now. 🙂 Thanks for the fun episode!
