Adventure Comics #425 (Cool Comic Covers #21)

It’s Friday! That means another Cool Comic Covers, a weekly (sometimes more!) look back at some of the most interesting, intriguing, and engaging artwork in pop culture. This week, a bad day scenario if I’ve ever seen one . . .

Adventure Comics #425, DC Comics, by Michael Kaluta.

I hate it when this happens. You know the situation. You’re climbing up a mountain and then you fall, which is okay because you have a safety line, but then you get attacked by a winged horse. It doesn’t happen every time I climb mountains, but it happens enough, am I right?

All sarcasm aside, this cover does it’s job. I want to know what is inside. I want to see this story.

I also know that whatever is inside cannot hold a candle to this image. No story can do this cover justice.

I’m a fan of Michael Kaluta (full disclosure — he drew one of the alternate covers for The Hedge Knight . . . the best one, I should add) but one thing I love about his work is the way it flows. I don’t understand enough about art to explain much more than that, but I love the way the wings sweep and the motion of the horse’s approach, with its sweeping arcs, while the human seems to be connected with straight lines, from the rope to his breath to the gun and pickax.

The Hedge Knight #1, cover B, by Michael Kaluta.
