Mary Marvel #5 (Cool Comic Covers #23)

It’s Friday! That means another Cool Comic Covers, a weekly (sometimes more!) look back at some of the most interesting, intriguing, and engaging artwork in pop culture. This week, after last week’s romantic diversion, we take a look at a cover that is a little less bogged down by controversy and is just plain COOL . . .

Mary Marvel #5, Fawcett. Art by Jack Binder.

Now, I don’t understand this picture.

I don’t know why Mary Marvel is riding a butterfly, since she can fly.

I don’t know why Mary Marvel is riding a butterfly, since riding butterflies is just weird.

But there is something so compelling about this cover. Like so many Cool Comic Covers, I’m curious what in the world this cover portray. Is this portraying the story inside? Because if it is, there is NO way the story can live up to the promise. The story in question is probably called “Flower Land”, but as I said, there is no way it can live up to this image.

“Flower Land”, incidentally, along with more than half of the over 1,000 Marvel Family stories Fawcett produced before it went under, was written by Otto Binder. Otto Binder was the younger brother of Jack Binder, who was trained as a fine artist and became a commercial artist . . . and comic book artist.

In many of Jack Binder’s covers, you can see his fine art education shining through. Seeing this cover on the rack next to some of the other pulp schlock other companies were pumping out. He’ll he seen again here in Cool Comic Covers.

For now, just take the time to enjoy beauty and absorb the absurdity of a a girl who can fly . . . flying on a butterfly.
